Harry Baker Brighton Komedia

Harry Baker Review

Harry Baker has been around for a while now. There are lots of YouTube videos out there and I had read his books but this was the first time I had seen him live. First time too in the Komedia in Brighton. A really nice venue that holds a variety of gigs, cabaret and stand up comedy. The perfect place to see Harry Baker (one of 3 nights he was performing there). Harry’s style is very personable. His show is made up of anecdotes and wry observations - not just on the absurdities of life but also on its delights. The thing that delights him most is his new born son and much of the show was taken up with the refections of a new parent, operating, as all new parents do, as total and utter amateurs alongside the most precious thing in the world - a baby that is a constant source of wonder - and worry. Harry is far from a spoken word ranter. He talks of starting off in poetry slams which is weird because he is so unaggressive and laid back that you simply can’t imagine him doing that. That is not to say he is a a shy or timid performer. He knows his craft and through a combination of anecdotes and poems - often splitting his poems with an aside or explanation before returning to the verse, he delivered a masterclass in how to perform spoken word poetry. It was also extremely funny. Laugh out loud funny. His comic timing is spot on and he held the Brighton audience in the palm of his hand for 2 - 1 hour sets. This included audience participation in a tongue twisting rendition of a poem in German about falafels (you had to be there but extremely funny). If you get the chance to go and see Harry Baker do so - he’s a really great performer and this was a great gig. Website
